Looe, a thriving coastal town, and picturesque fishing harbour was recently named amongst the best value destination for staycations, and as a favourite holiday destination with its wide sandy beaches, panoramic views, and stunning scenery that will take your breath away.
Not only famous for its day-caught fish Looe was recently used as a backdrop to the BBC series “Beyond Paradise”. A BBC crime drama television series that first aired on 24 February 2023, starring Kris Marshall as DI Humphrey Goodman and Sally Bretton as Martha Lloyd, Zahra Ahmadi as DS Ester Williams, Dylan Llewellyn as PC Kelby Hartford, Felicity Montagu as Office support, Margo Martins and Barbara Flynn as Anne Lloyd.
Like the series, Looe is full of charm and mystique that will thrill everyone that visits the town. Here are some locations with breathtaking views, used as back drops during the filming, that you might like to visit.
West Looe
In the first episode of Beyond Paradise we see PC Kelby Hartford jumping into a boat and crossing the river from East Looe to West Looe while chasing a suspect. He catches him close to the fire station which appeared in episode 5 where there were arson attacks on 3 places including Archie's winery. Crossing back over to East Looe you will find many of the other locations used in the series.
Looe Guildhall
The New Guildhall, Fore Street, East Looe is set in the heart of the town and run by East Looe Town Trust. The listed building built in the 19th Century is one of the town’s finest buildings. The Looe Guildhall features in all episodes of Beyond Paradise because it is the location of Shipton Abbot's police station. It is here that Humphrey and his team discuss cases. Just outside the building is the location of the outdoor market featured in some of the episodes and also where Humphrey and Ester sit to discuss the arson attacks in episode 5 and where he demonstrates to her how the fires were started.
East Looe Quay
Coming out of the police station you come into the Rose Garden, turning right you will see the fish market. It is here that we see PC Kelby Hartford chasing another suspect through the market and up the quay before losing him and is also close to the net storage facilities that we see PC Hartford in while interviewing a woman about a break in during episode 5.
Looe Banjo Pier
Looe is famous for its bustling fishing port where the day caught fish is landed on East Looe quay. During the Medieval period it was most famous for its unusually shaped and distinctive Banjo Pier.
In the early days, the mouth of the river would become repeatedly choked by silt, preventing ships from gaining access to the Harbour. So, in 1897 local engineer Joseph Thomas proposed a new idea and built a shorter, more substantial pier with a circular end to resolve the problem, Hence the name of ‘Banjo Pier’. The Banjo Pier is seen when Martha is talking to her mum.
Looe Beach
Looe has plenty of stunning beaches to visit. If you walk along the quaint streets with its array of cafes and restaurants offering delicious light snacks, lunches, and refreshments right to the end of the Looe, it will bring you out onto Looe Beach, also known as East Looe Beach. This popular family beach has something for everyone.
This fabulous beach is sheltered from the west by the famous Banjo Pier, with its soft sand and clear shallow waters it offers safe swimming, with the eastern end providing a perfect setting for the rock pool adventurers and climbers. With toilets nearby. Regrettably, the beach is not open to dogs.
Looe Beach is the location where Martha took her yoga class and is seen talking to her mum at the beginning of episode 5.
It is also where Humphrey sat in episode 6 after Martha broke off their engagement.
Just down from here on the seafront was where Humphrey and Archie had their fight after Archie in episode 5 admitted to kissing Martha.
